An .ova is published as a VM template as it is. A single .vmdk must be streamOptimized (exported from vSphere or VMware Workstation, or qemu-img convert -O vmdk -o subformat=streamOptimized); give its CPUs and memory below and an OVF is generated around it. An .iso is published as a disc image VMs can mount.
